DESCRIPTION:Learn to make cordage for weaving with stinging nettle stalks\, an ancient fiber plant that is still used in textiles today.\n\n\nThis is a hands-on class where we will be learning how to work with stinging nettles to create cordage (the first step in creating cloth). We will discuss how and when to harvest nettles for fiber\, how to process the stalks\, and work them into cordage. DESCRIPTION:Join geographer and naturalist Heather Day-Melgar for a casual 90 minute walk through Tryon Creek State Natural Area. We will practice plant identification and observation\, engage in conversation\, and learn about traditional uses and importance of our local plants. We will use the smart phone application iNaturalist to practice plant ID\, and to contribute to community science. \nHeather encourages building a relationship with the local ecosystem through sensory experience. Tryon Creek is located 15 minutes from downtown Portland\, and has 8 miles of hiking trails\, 8 bridges\, a variety of biodiversity\, and a boardwalk over a wetland. Dress for possible rain\, as this will take place light rain or shine. Whitaker Ponds is a 22 acre nature park located in NE Portland\, Dress for possible rain\, as this will take place light rain or shine. The group will meet under the eco roof gazebo next to the parking lot\, and walk the half mile loop around the pond. Bring your birding gear\, as this location is perfect for birding too! Many species have been spotted on the pond. \nTour accessibility includes: \nThe best access to the park is from the main entrance at 7040 NE 47th Avenue\, a quarter of a mile north of Columbia Blvd. There is a parking lot with two ADA parking spaces and curb cuts into the property for people who use mobility-assisted devices. The terrain is uneven and includes moderate elevation gain. SUMMARY:Family Friendly Spring Flowers Walk at Forest Park
DESCRIPTION:Join co-leaders Robin and Anya\, former long-time techs with Backyard Habitat Certification Program\, who will explore and identify emerging spring native flowers and observe spring birds too. If families with young children register (and we welcome you!) we will hike about 1 mile on a Sunnyside and Shadyside Trail loop. If not\, we can extend the hike to Council Crest for a total of 3.7 miles. As with most hikes in the park\, it is steep in sections. Bring snacks and water as needed and dress for any weather and muddy trails. Meet at the Marquam Nature Park Shelter off of SW Sam Jackson Park Rd.
