SUMMARY:Bark’s July Campout!
DESCRIPTION:Bark is hosting the first of our two planned campouts this summer! Campouts allow us to collect much more data than we’re able to do in a single field day with the added fun of hanging out with fellow Barkers at camp afterwards! You’ll get the opportunity to join us for groundtruthing\, beaver habitat\, and wetland verification surveys. No experience necessary! \nOur first campout is focused on surveying the South Wasco Ecosystem Resiliency (SWER) project\, which is currently being developed by the Forest Service. The project area is roughly south of Frog Lake\, and east of Clear Lake along the National Forest and Warm Springs Reservation boundary. It is too early to know exactly what the Forest Service will be proposing\, but SWER is a very large project containing a range of forest types and plant communities\, including some areas of the forest with mature and old growth characteristics. The data we collect will be critical to Bark’s advocacy\, defense\, and restoration work. \nShout out to The Mazamas for their generous support in funding this campout! \nWhat to Expect\nOn the first day\, meet Bark staff at the Bark office at 9am. From there we will carpool/caravan to the campsite. \nCan’t join us for the whole campout? No problem. Register and let us know what day(s) we should expect you! We will try to ensure that carpooling is available for folks wanting to join on Friday or Saturday. \nWant to drive yourself? Great! We will send out campsite coordinates the day before the campout\, when the location is finalized. \nEach day will go something like this… \n\nWake up and eat breakfast\, gather gear\, and whatever else you need to prepare for a day of surveying.\nCircle up in camp to discuss the plan for the day and form groups. Then\, leave camp with our groups and head to our survey locations. You will be able to choose between groundtruthing (forest) surveys\, wetland surveys\, and beaver habitat surveys.\nGroups will meet back at camp in the afternoon to share our findings\, hang out\, swim\, relax\, eat dinner\, and sleep.\n\nQuestions?  Need to borrow anything? Email ForestWatch@Bark-Out.org \nFor more info and link to registration\, visit: https://bark-out.org/event/barks-july-campout/ \n

SUMMARY:Forest Watch Committee
DESCRIPTION:The Forest Watch Committee is Bark’s group of dedicated volunteers who keep watch over Mt Hood National Forest and gain a more in-depth understanding of how National Forests are managed. We meet monthly to discuss projects on Mt Hood\, prioritize areas to groundtruth\, collaborate on NEPA comments\, and strategize our response to destructive proposals. As needed\, we will discuss and collaborate on regional or national environmental policy changes related to our work. \nIf you want to be more informed and involved with actions proposed on Mt Hood National Forest and meet others who share your interests\, the Forest Watch Committee is a great place to be! \nWe meet in the Bark office on the third Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm. If you are interested in joining\, please reach out to Jordan\, Bark’s Forest Watch Program Manager (jordan@bark-out.org) for more information and to be added to the email list.

SUMMARY:Groundtruthing 101 w/ Bark
DESCRIPTION:Bark’s groundtruthing program has been a core piece of our defense work since Bark’s founding in 1999. Every field season\, Bark staff and volunteers survey areas on Mt Hood National Forest where Forest Service projects are proposed\, from timber sales\, to road maintenance\, to prescribed fire\, and more. The data we collect enables Bark and the public to assess how accurately the agency’s project documents describe the forest and impacts. By providing more transparent and accessible information\, groundtruthers help the public to better understand and engage in decisions about public lands management. Groundtruthers can and have found discrepancies in agency information and located rare or threatened plants and animal species\, leading to the alteration or cancellation of projects. \nThis training will go over what Bark surveys for and how we use this information to shape and influence the decision-making on Mt Hood National Forest. Learn how to understand US Forest Service project documents\, navigate off trail with maps\, measure tree diameter\, canopy cover\, slope\, and how to be a stronger advocate for your local National Forest. No experience required! \nGroundtruthing 101 will be a classroom-style training hosted at Bark HQ and taught by Jordan Latter\, Bark’s Forest Watch Program Manager. Bring a pen and paper or laptop if you wish to take notes. \nBark HQ is located at 351 NE 18th Avenue in Portland\, OR. It is a wheelchair-accessible space with gender neutral restrooms. \nStay tuned for Groundtruthing 201 – a hands-on groundtruthing training in the field!

SUMMARY:Inner Bark: Citizen’s Rare Plant Watch
DESCRIPTION:Bark and Citizens Rare Plant Watch are joining forces to bring volunteers into the office to learn about rare plants\, and specifically Corydalis aquae-gelidae. Identifying rare plants in timber sales can help build better comments\, identify at-risk ecosystems\, and just deepen our understanding of nature. \nIf you attend this classroom portion\, you will be then invited to a field portion on July 7th. Field portion details will only be given to those who attend. \nCitizen’s Rare Plant Watch is a group based out of PSU which trains volunteers to search for rare species of plants and contribute to their conservation in the state of Oregon. Our mission is to increase the understanding of the status and extent of rare plant species throughout Oregon\, while promoting direct involvement of volunteers in conservation. \nNora Dunkirk is a Mycologist and Botanist with INR at Portland State University. She completed her PhD at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the Botany Department\, where she focused on Fungal biology in response to global change. At INR\, she works with plants and fungi\, developing species accounts for species of conservation concern\, and she is responsible for maintaining the plant\, lichen\, and fungi INR rare species databases. Nora has recently taken leadership of the group Citizen’s Rare Plant Watch\, which leads volunteers to help land managers in Oregon find rare native plants across the state.

SUMMARY:Wetland Mapping Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Bark for a Mt Hood Wetland Mapping Field Day! No experience required! \nWetlands serve many functions- from biodiversity hotspots\, water storage and filtration\, aquifer replenishment\, wildfire breaks and more. Luckily\, wetlands are protected from logging and other destructive treatments in timber sales. However\, when the Forest Service plans timber sales\, they refer to the National Wetland Inventory– an inventory mostly done in the 1980’s and with technology less sophisticated than scientists now use. Therefore\, when the Forest Service is planning timber sales and other forest projects\, they may not have accurate information about the current location\, size\, and type of many wetlands. This is where Bark comes in! Staff and volunteers are able to assess wetlands on the ground and use that information to stop destructive timber projects in sensitive wetland areas. It’s like groundtruthing but in wetlands! \nEveryone is welcome and no experience necessary! Wetland Mapping field days are moderate to high physical activity days with plenty of stepping over logs\, wading into wetland areas and pushing through shrubs. We’ll collect data from all over our site and assess our site to see if the wetland codes on our maps match what we see on the ground. This includes assessing plants\, hydrology and soils- be ready to get your hands dirty! \nFor every field day\, we will all meet at Gateway/NE 99th Ave. at 9 am. Make sure to meet us at the entrance to the parking garage! From there we will coordinate carpooling to our secondary location. This location will vary depending on the final survey site so keep an eye out for an update/reminder email a few days before the event. At the secondary location\, I will share the coordinates for our final destination\, and we will caravan together to the site. At the final site\, we will do our Land Acknowledgement writing practice\, share safety info\, talk about the site and then head into the field for some surveying! While in the field\, we will stop frequently for breaks\, water\, snacks and lunch. We will survey for approximately 4 hours\, depending on the length of our drive\, and return in time to be at the Gateway/99th Ave. Park and Ride between 5 and 6pm. \nCheck out our website for more info: Typical Field Day\, Field Day Packing List \nQuestions?  Email Meg@Bark-Out.org

SUMMARY:Using Colonizers: Plantain
DESCRIPTION:Let’s take a look at using the plant Plantain! \nThis little groundcover genus\, Plantago\, is also known as ‘White Man’s Foot’. While it is not as invasive as other species I have focused on\, it is plentiful and easily harvested. During this workshop\, we will also be making salve using mainly plantain\, oil\, and beeswax. This is useful on dry skin and minor injuries! \nThe location of the training itself will be indoors at Bark’s Office at 351 NE 18th Avenue\, Portland\, OR. 97232. This event will have classroom style learning so bring pencil and paper. Gender-neutral restrooms will be available. \n‘Using Colonizers’ is Bark’s class series focusing on using invasive species as much as we can. This not only removes harmful species from Pacific Northwest spaces\, but gives us tools to use the removed plants instead of just killing them. Have a craft you’d like to teach? Have a backyard filled with invasives and would like to host? Contact me at Haley@bark-out.org \nRegistration Required \nSliding Scale $0-$20

SUMMARY:Introduction to Wetland Ecology and Mapping
DESCRIPTION:Join Bark staff to learn about basic wetland ecology and Barks work to protect on Mt. Hood! \nWetlands are often in and around forested areas proposed for logging and other timber treatments. Although there are strict rules protecting wetlands from being disturbed in timber extraction\, those rules only apply to wetland which are accurately mapped and many of them aren’t. Since most wetland mapping in Oregon was done in the 1980’s\, many wetlands go un-mapped or don’t match the size and shape they were mapped at decades ago. When we gain on-the-ground access to these wetlands\, we’re able to accurately map their boundaries and classify them correctly\, helping to protect them from future management projects on the mountain. \nThis class will be an integral first step in learning how to identify and classify wetlands on Mt. Hood in order to protect them from timber sales and other destructive practices. In-field trainings will follow later in the summer. \nLocation: Bark Office\, 351 NE 18th Avenue\, Portland\, OR 97232 \nDate and Time: Wednesday\, 5/14. 6pm-8pm. \nQuestions? Concerns? Email Meg@Bark-Out.org

SUMMARY:Parrott Creek Restoration Day
DESCRIPTION:Bark is partnering with the Cultural Ecology Program at Parrott Creek to restore an 80-acre site in Clackamas County\nThe Parrott Creek project site is under the leadership of Ameyalli Mañon-Ferguson who is the Cultural Ecology Program Manager for Parrott Creek Child and Family Services in Oregon City\, OR. Here\, she leads the stewardship of the 80 acres of mixed coniferous forest\, creeks\, wetlands\, and grassland prairie at their youth residential treatment program site. This program serves highly traumatized adjudicated male youth as an alternative to incarceration\, providing one-on-one and group therapy\, drug and alcohol counseling\, an on-site school and personalized treatment plans to build the skills they will need to go back into the community. As part of her role\, Ameyalli engages these youth in the outdoors\, partners with Indigenous community members and organizations\, and collaborates with environmental organizations and agencies. The combined effort and community engagement in this program work towards the ultimate goal to restore the land to be a culturally and ecologically functioning site by centering traditional ecological and cultural knowledge. \nBy leading restoration through an Indigenous stewardship lens\, prioritizing traditional ecological knowledge and service to the local Indigenous communities\, the Cultural Ecology Program demonstrates a dedication to Indigenous peoples beyond land acknowledgment statements. \nThis land site will provide Indigenous people a safe place to gather natural resources such as first foods\, medicines\, and basketry materials\, connect with the land\, and engage in environmental stewardship. Such opportunities are unfortunately limited as people are either restricted from gathering or don’t know if it is safe from waste\, pollution\, and chemicals. This is especially true for those living in the Portland metro area and other urban communities with limited access to natural areas. Through its priorities and approach\, this program works towards simultaneously addressing trauma held in the youth\, the Indigenous community\, and the land. \nJoin us to help restore this incredible space! We will be planting native plants\, protecting young plants\, removing invasives and doing trail maintenance\, depending on the day.  \nTime: 10am-1pm \nLocation: 22518 S Parrott Creek Rd\, Oregon City\, OR 97045 \nBring: All-weather gear\, long pants\, sturdy shoes (rubber boots recommended but hiking boots ok)\, rain gear\, sunglasses\, water\, snacks (some snacks provided). \nWeather forecast: NOAA Weather Oregon City. We will cancel the event if the weather is expected to be below 35 degrees OR very rainy. \nParking: Weekend events: Once inside the main entrance\, turn left and down the hill to park in the large parking lot. Look for Bark signs. \nWeekday events: Due to ongoing construction\, please park along the side of the road leading up to the entrance. You must wear a safety vest and hard hat while walking across the construction site to where we will be working. If you’re late\, please contact Meg to have someone meet you at the entrance with a vest and hardhat. \nAccessibility: Events will be light rain or shine! However\, if there is heavy rain or temperatures are below 35 degrees\, we will postpone or cancel the day. \nThis event will be focused on removing invasive plants! Invasive removal days will be a 4-5/5 accessibility with bending\, squatting\, digging large roots (often blackberry)\, handling thorny plants\, carrying materials. Each site will require walking/standing on steep hills which may be slippery and/or require crossing a small stream on a flat log. \nQuestions?  Need to carpool? Email Meg@Bark-Out.org \n  \nLink: https://bark-out.org/event/parrott-creek-restoration-day-4-12-2025/
