SUMMARY:Hoyt Arboretum with People of Color Outdoors!
DESCRIPTION:This walk offers something rare: the chance to explore a place new to them\, and an opportunity to see trees from all over the world.\n\n\nHoyt Arboretum holds over 6\,000 trees representing more than 2\,300 species from every continent on earth. For many east Portland residents\, this walk offers something rare: the chance to explore a place new to them\, and an opportunity to see trees from all over the world. \nWe’ll walk among trees from Japan\, Korea\, Ethiopia\, Mexico\, the Pacific Islands\, and beyond. Our guide will introduce each with its origin story\, its ecology\, and its cultural significance to the people who have lived alongside it. Participants are invited to find a tree that feels familiar or one entirely new\, and spend time with it. This walk often opens unexpected conversations about memory\, belonging\, and what it means to feel at home in a landscape.

SUMMARY:Join People of Color Outdoors at Upper Macleay Park
DESCRIPTION:Come chill and connect with People of Color in the great outdoors at Upper Macleay Park!\n\n\nJoin People of Color Outdoors at Upper Macleay Park\n10:05 AM – Gateway Transit Center \nApprox. 10:40 AM – Upper Macleay Trailhead \n11:10 AM – Board Express Park Loop shuttle to Upper Macleay Park \n11:25: Arrive at Upper Macleay \n  \n12:45pm: Board East line to Gateway Transit Central \n1:15pm arrive at Gateway Transit Center \nPamela Slaughter\, People of Color Outdoors \n\n\nJoin People of Color Outdoors (POCO) for an observation walk through Upper Macleay Park – a walk designed to teach one of the most valuable skills a person can develop in nature: the ability to slow down\, truly observe\, and share what you notice. \nEach participant will choose one layer of the forest to watch for the entire walk\, such as the canopy overhead\, the shrub layer at eye level\, the ground beneath your feet\, or the air itself. We stop twice to compare what each layer revealed. The walk closes with journal time before boarding the shuttle. The conversation continues on the ride home. \nGreat for families with children. This walk is hands-on and discovery-driven.

SUMMARY:People of Color Outdoors at Forest Park - Upper Macleay
DESCRIPTION:This walk teaches one of the most valuable skills a person can develop in nature: to slow down\, truly observe\, and share observations.\n\n\nMany Indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest understood the natural world not as a collection of resources but as a community of relatives. Each species had a role\, a relationship\, and a reciprocal obligation. This walk brings that lens into the forest. \nWe’ll introduce participants to the forest’s community members: the red alder that fixes nitrogen and feeds its neighbors\, the sword fern that shelters the soil\, the Douglas fir that provides housing for over 200 species of wildlife. Each participant or family will choose one relative to observe and stay curious about for the entire walk. At the midpoint stop\, we’ll ask: what does your relative give to the community? What does it need? The walk closes with a writing exercise that children and adults often find unexpectedly moving. \n\nReserve a spot: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/people-of-color-outdoors-at-forest-park-upper-macleay-tickets-1990681883100

SUMMARY:Story Walk - The Hidden Life of Forest Park with People of Color Outdoors!
DESCRIPTION:This walk will reveal some things about Forest Park that you may not have known\, story-style.\n\n\nWe’re meeting at the small park and ride lot on NE Pacific and NE 98th (turn west at the four way stop)\, not the large park and ride with the parking garage on 99th. We’re taking the free shuttle to Lower Macleay Park where we will meet at the shelter before we start our walk. The shuttle will leave the park and ride at 12:10PM and arrive at Lower Mcleay Park at 12:45PM. The shuttle will leave the park at 2:30pm and arrive at the park and ride at 3:00pm. \nWhat to expect \nThe land we know as Forest Park dates was the home of Indigenous people\, including the Clackamas\, Kathlamet\, Multnomah\, and Tualatin people\, for thousands of years. In the 1890s\, this land was platted for residential development. The streets were surveyed; the lots were numbered. But the homes were never built. The hillsides were steep\, the soil eroded\, and the city eventually acquired the land and let it return to forest. The Olmsted Brothers recommended it as a park in 1903. It took until 1948 to become official. The park you walk through today is\, in part\, an accident of geography that became an intentional gift. \nUsing Marcy Houle’s book Forest Park as our guide\, we’ll meet the trees and plants of this forest as characters with their own life histories: the bigleaf maple that shelters the understory\, the red alder that heals disturbed soil\, the Douglas fir that can live 500 years. Each has a story. So does the ground beneath your feet. \nWhat to bring \n• Comfortable walking shoes (trail terrain with some incline) \n• Layered clothing (Portland forest mornings can be cool) \n• Water bottle \n• Optional: your own journal or sketchbook \n• Optional: rain jacket \n  \n\n\nReserve a spot: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/story-walk-the-hidden-life-of-forest-park-with-people-of-color-outdoors-tickets-1989726692098

SUMMARY:Unwind at Forest Park with People of Color Outdoors!
DESCRIPTION:Slow down and let the forest restore you. We’ll walk Balch Creek Trail\, pause to breathe\, and notice what the body feels. No experience need\n\n\nWe’re meeting at the small park and ride lot on NE Pacific and NE 98th (turn west at the four way stop)\, not the large park and ride with the parking garage on 99th. \nWhat to expect \nThis first walk eases participants gently into the forest with no agenda except arrival. Forest bathing\, rooted in the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku\, is the art of being present in a natural place and allowing it to restore you. You don’t need to know the names of trees or birds. You only need to slow down. \nWe’ll walk the Balch Creek Trail toward the Stone House ruins\, letting the creek sound and the deep tree canopy do their work. We’ll stop midway for a quiet sitting practice\, noticing what the body hears\, smells\, and feels rather than what the eyes see. Journals and art supplies will be available for anyone who wants to capture a moment. \nWhat to bring \n• Comfortable walking shoes (trail terrain with some incline) \n• Layered clothing (Portland forest mornings can be cool) \n• Water bottle \n• Optional: your own journal or sketchbook \n• Optional: rain jacket \n
